Uninvited Guest

He (or she) came in the late afternoon. We often see raccoons, but they are usually not this bold. It let me get quite close and at one point, it started walking toward me. I think this fellow is one of the locals that are fed regularly by at least two neighbors. Probably grew up eating dinner next door. I'm not sure why people like to feed raccoons, I suppose for the same reason that I feed squirrels. Wanting to discourage him, I tried spraying him with the hose. He climbed to the very top of a tree and waited til I went away, came down, and continued foraging. I'm not too happy to see this creature since it does not seem to be afraid of us. Rabies is a serious problem. This guy looked healthy enough, but I prefer he stay away from me and I will stay away from him. I did get a lot of photos, but not any really good ones.

Pretty good photo. We get a lot of raccoons but we usually only see them late at night. Most of the time it's mom and her babies and she's more interested in keeping them together than causing problems. Of course this is why we keep the cat inside at night.

It always makes me a little nervous when I see these nocturnal guys out in the middle of the day. Rabies most definitely always comes to mind but perhaps you're right in that he's just used to being fed by the neighbors - which is not a smart thing. Keep that hose close!

That's a good picture of the raccoon. It's been several years since I saw one around here.
You do have to be cautious when wild animals do not show their usual fear around people.

What a great picture. I came down this morning and found a big hairy thing on my front porch, a ground hog I think. He was gone before I could get the camera. I was afraid to let my little dog our for a while.
